The Art of Healing
The late afternoon sun was bright and warm. The air was stale, the breeze faint. I could feel sweat forming on my brow. I just bought a book as I was going home after work. I looked over my shoulder for traffic one last time before riding on the bicycle path.
I first noticed ceiling tiles and the curtains hanging around the bed I laid in. Then looking forward I saw wall cabinets. Noises from outside the room caught my attention when I looked trough the doorway into the hallway. I thought I might be in a hospital but wasn’t sure. Looking to my left I saw my mother and sister looking at me calmly but with concern. I believed things were all right by their expressions, so I turned my head and fell back to sleep.
These are the memories I have surrounding my bicycle accident resulting in a traumatic brain injury. The following images describe the events, feelings, and thoughts I went through during recovery. Telling people about the accident is difficult since I have no memory of the event and it has become very personal. I don’t want peoples pity and few people can relate, so I don’t talk about the experience. My intent is to convey some understanding about the recovery process.
